Peter Burke

Retired Surgeon — MBBS, FRCS, FRACS, FACEM, DHMSA, FAMA

Peter was born in Melbourne into a medical family and ultimately followed his father to Melbourne University completing the six-year medical course with honours. Specialising then in surgery, also involved several years spent in the UK NHS, before returning to Melbourne, when he was offered the position of Director of Casualty Services at St Vincent’s Hospital.

A Foundation Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, Peter was involved in a wide range of teaching roles and committees, including the National Road Trauma committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. In 1987 he was invited to chair the senior medical staff of Latrobe Valley Hospital: subsequently he and his family moved to the Latrobe Valley, living there ever since. As chair of the Gippsland subdivision of the AMA he has been deeply involved in both local and state medical politics. In addition to his active involvement in a wide range of community activities, he is currently completing his first book in the field of surgical history.
